A Russian court at the Krasnodar region of southern Russia has sentenced 63-year-old Alexander Ivashin to 7 1/2 years with hard labour for fostering the doctrine of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The sentence was on 10th February 2021.
It is important to note that the Supreme Court of Russia, in April 2017, had ruled that Jehovah’s Witnesses religion was an extremist Organisation. The apex court banned and ordered the shut down of all the houses and activities of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia, which was contrary to the freedom of religion and worship in that country’s constitution.
Since 2017, many members of Jehovah’s Witnesses have been harassed and imprisoned in Russia. Efforts to secure the intervention of President Vadremin Putin have not yielded much fruit.
