CONTEMPT OF COURT: A lawyer handcuffed and jailed for interrupting a ruling of a court

Big drama occurred at Magistrate of Court 2, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, when the hunter became the hunted. It was gathered Magistrate Ibrahim Mohammed angrily ordered the arrest of a lawyer, Barrister Eburu Ekwe Barth, whose action he considered as contempt of the court. The said lawyer was handcuffed and sentenced to prison for 2 months for interrupting and challenging the Magistrate when he was giving a ruling.

According to SaharaReporters, “the lawyer’s ground of interjection was that the magistrate was ascribing what he never said to him in his ruling. The lawyer further queried whether there was a conspiracy between the magistrate and the plaintiff’s lawyer. His interjection angered the magistrate and he immediately ordered his arrest and sentenced him for contempt. Pleas for mercy made by many lawyers present during the proceedings were ignored by the judge. The lawyer was taken to Suleja Prison.”
