On Tuesday, 19th January 2021, a court in Bangkok sentenced Ms. Anchan Preelert to 43 years imprisonment for leaking to social media, an audiotape that defamed the Thai Monarch, and which was against lèse-majesté law.
According to lèse-majesté law, it is a crime for Thai citizens to defame senior members of Thai monarchy. Since the kingship of Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, there has been an increase in protest against rulership of the Thai Monarch.
The sentence of Anchan, a former civil servant, was the longest monarchical defamation sentence ever recorded in Thailand.
