The world has been woken up to a new variant of coronavirus called Omicron (B.1.1.529), which is ravaging majorly the Southern parts of Africa – South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Eswatini, and Botswana. The virus has also been identified in some countries like Israel, Belgium, and Hong Kong.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is worried that “this variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning.”
Meanwhile, as a speedy health measure, many countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have imposed travel bans on most of the countries experiencing Omicron. Such restrictions have attracted the condemnation of the South African Government. According to Joe Phaahla, South Africa’s Health Minister, “the reaction of some of the countries, in terms of imposing travel bans, and such measures, are completely against the norms and standards as guided by the World Health Organization.”
