Patrick Assoumou Eyi, who was the national coach of the Gabonese under-17 football team, has been arrested at Ntoum near the capital Libreville, for sexually assaulting young players.
According to the police department, “he is currently in the hands of the police and is being charged with pedophilia.”
Franck Nguema, Gabonese Sports Minister, alleged that Eyi “might have abused hundreds of young boys in the course of his duties”.
A former Gabonese player noted that: “It’s been many years that we have been talking about it. I was still very young, I think when I was playing as a junior cadet, we were already talking about it, so it’s not a new case in the Gabonese sports circles.”
